Domestic Relations.

With domestic practice, the divorce attorneys of the Ciyou & Dixon P.C. handle cases throughout the State in divorce cases, paternity matters, post-divorce and paternity child custody and support modifications. The balance of Ciyou & Dixon, P.C.'s divorce cases are mostly complex or novel. These range from cases pending with criminal components or protective orders to cases with multi-state disputes.

Also, certain divorce law cases generate domestic appeals, and the Firm handles these. An appeal of right is guaranteed by the Indiana Constitution to the Indiana Court of Appeals. After this Court decides the appealed case, the party (called appellant or appellee) may seek rehearing of the same issues in this Court or seek transfer to the Indiana Supreme Court, which is the highest state court.

Civil Practice.

While civil practice may seem removed from domestic relations, at Ciyou & Dixon, P.C. we observe time and again the line between the two is a fine one or sometimes does not exist. For example, a divorce may involve only one asset, a closely-held corporation whose shares of stock are all owned or controlled by the parties.

In such a case, a depth of working knowledge of business law is inextricably linked to the necessities of the divorce case. Our civil practice thus augments our other core practice areas. Many Ciyou & Dixon, P.C. attorney cases with such interlinked legal problems are also be underpinned by non-legal dynamics. These range from emotional ties to a case to multi-state litigation or those with simultaneous civil and criminal proceedings and competing courses of action and legal objectives.

Appellate Advocacy.

In civil and/or criminal cases, the constitutional right to an appeal is what keeps law from dissipating and lacking uniformity across the State and Nation. The Court of Appeals is located in Indianapolis, Indiana and is the initial forum for most appeals from civil or criminal cases. This Court applies or interprets the law. We review each case to determine the strength of the appeal and work with you to determine the most prudent argument on appeal.

At Ciyou & Dixon, P.C., we believe a hallmark of our legal representation is the ability to handle a case in a trial court while simultaneously viewing the on-going case in the context of an appeal. Many times, we have had the opportunity to see cases through the entire trial and appellate process. This experience allows us to effectively pick up and handle an appeal, where a trial counsel does not handle appeals.

In addition, because some cases involve federal dimensions and/or are of great importance to society at large, Ciyou & Dixon, P.C. is equipped to handle certain federal civil or criminal appeals within their circuit, the 7th Circuit, or seek certiorari to the United States Supreme Court.

Firearms Law.

The Firm's last core practice area is firearms law. This is linked to Bryan Ciyou's personal interest in firearms law, and publication of three books on the topic, to the reality that these issues frequently arise in domestic relations, civil and criminal cases.

For example, once heard a qualified order of protection Brady disqualifies a person from possessing firearms and likely forms a basis for revocation of his or her License to Carry issued by the State. In today's post-911 society, the implications of this reach beyond the domestic case and alarm employers and sometimes prevent an employee from doing his or her job and ability to remain employed, such as if the order issues against a police officer or member of the military.

In our core practice areas, Ciyou & Dixon, P.C. attorneys understand details do matter. The permutations of the reasonable courses of action must be defined and carefully considered.
