Should My Lawyer Prepare Me for Trial?

Should My Lawyer Prepare Me for Trial?

Trials can be intimidating for many, which is understandable since most individuals have little to no experience in a trial setting. Therefore, preparing for a trial with your attorney is generally a good idea. Even more, there are many benefits an individual can get from preparing for trial with their lawyer. In this blog, we look at whether your lawyer should prepare you for trial and the benefits that come with preparing with your attorney.

One reason to prepare with your lawyer before a trial is that it gives the lawyer an opportunity to go over questions that he or she plans to ask you at trial. This is beneficial because it takes out the surprise or confusion surrounding certain questions your attorney plans to ask you at a trial. While your attorney cannot tell you how to answer certain questions, it will give you an opportunity to at least hear the questions beforehand and ask any questions, concerns, or comments you may have to particular questions.

Another reason to prepare with your lawyer before trial is so that your lawyer can go over courtroom decorum and attire appropriate for the trial. While this may seem small in comparison to whatever legal issue you have going on, it is not. Courtroom decorum and appropriate attire are important issues to address in preparation for your trial. When you are in a courtroom, you always need to be on your best behavior. The reason being is that, whether you think so or not, the Court is observing your demeanor, observing your facial expressions, your sighs, and your under-the-breath comments. Trials are generally an extremely hard thing to go through. Emotions are ripe. It may feel like there is personal attack after personal attack. But remember, it is only temporary, and holding your emotions in check can prevent many negative effects bad courtroom decorum may result in.

A final reason to prepare with your lawyer before trial is so your attorney can provide expectations for how the trial will go. Oftentimes, individuals who do not prepare with their attorney before trial go into said trials with a lot of confusion and questions surrounding the process. Therefore, preparing with your lawyer beforehand can give you and your attorney the opportunity to discuss how the trial will go and answer any questions/concerns you may have before entering the courtroom. Ultimately, the benefit of going over expectations for trial can help to relieve some potential fears or anxiety you may have from the unknown of the trial process.

There are many reasons and benefits for preparing with your lawyer before trial, and the above information is general in nature. Finding the right attorney can be a challenging task at times. But it is important to remember that you have the right to an attorney that is dedicated to your case and an attorney that you feel comfortable and confident in. Obtaining skilled counsel is key to relieving some of the burden and stress that comes with legal issues.
